KARLA REGARDED HIM with a smug grin. "There were women pirates, you know. Anne Bonny, Mary Reed, Grace O'Malley, Rachel Wall." She lifted the sleepy kitten from her lap and stared into the furry face, taking in the black patch. Pirate indeed. "She looks like a Mary Grace to me."

"I'm impressed. History buff?"

"Not so much. One of the granddaughters wanted to be a pirate for Halloween a few years back. Since the most popular are men, we had the same issue finding a name. We went looking for costume ideas online, and some of the names stuck."

Their lunch looked complete. Karla set the kitten on the floor and patted her behind to send her on her way. She loved the way the top she'd borrowed from Callie billowed and flowed with her every move. It looked so graceful and made her feel more feminine than she'd thought possible. Maybe if I stick it in my closet, Callie will forget I have it. "Not likely."

"Excuse me?"

"Oh nothing...just thinking out loud."

She moved to the sink to wash her hands. When she turned, Ian stood behind a chair, ready to assist her, the perfect gentlemen. Karla crossed the room and took the seat he offered. "Thank you."

"My pleasure." He scooted into the chair across from her and held out a hand.

Karla laid her fingers in his and bowed her head as he blessed the food. She looked up to find his eyes locked on her with an intensity that stole her breath. She looked back down, lifted her napkin, and spread it in her lap, all in a bid for an extra calming breath or two...or five. She picked up her fork and met his gaze, hoping that he didn't notice the tremor in her hand. "Dinner looks amazing."

"You surpass anything on the table. I've been admiring that lovely blouse all day. You're beautiful in red. Did you get that on your shopping trip yesterday?"

Grateful for something to talk about that wouldn't stain her cheeks or accelerate her heart rate, Karla grinned. "Do you like it? I was just wishing that I could figure out a way to keep it."

He tilted his head, fork midway between his plate and his mouth. "Did you steal it?"

On solid ground at last, Karla shook her head. Dinner was filled with laughter as she shared the story of friendships, impromptu makeovers, and borrowed clothes. The memories had tears of mirth streaming from her eyes as she laid her fork aside. "I had one woman standing over me with a fold up brush that wouldn't stay open, another circling the room minus her shirt, two arguing over makeup choices, and one prowling through Callie's desk looking for a snack."

"And they did all of that just so we could have some time together?"

Karla nodded.

"I'll have to thank them. I know Callie from the doctor's office, but I'd like to meet the rest of them."

She stood and took her plate to the sink. "I'm sure you will if you hang around me for very long.
